CIHR's main open competition for investigator-initiated health research in any area, run twice a year. One global rating covers concept and feasibility; Spring 2026 funded 439 of 3,344 applications (13.1%).

- No set minimum, maximum or term; Spring 2026 grants averaged C$935,663 over 4.44 years (about C$209,000 a year) after a 23.5% across-the-board cut. A separate C$20M envelope per competition funds the largest 2% of requests.

- Eligibility
- The Nominated Principal Applicant must be an independent researcher or knowledge user at a Canadian post-secondary institution or affiliate, or an eligible Indigenous organisation, with their substantive role in Canada. Any career stage; at most two applications per competition as NPA; SGBA+ training certificate required.
- Format & limits
- Lay abstract: 2,000 characters; Research summary: 3,500 characters; Research proposal: 10 pages (12 in French) plus references; Summary of Progress: 2 pages; Most significant contributions: 3,500 characters per applicant. CVs use the CIHR Biosketch (Canadian Common CV).

NSERC's largest program: long-term operating grants for a researcher's program of natural sciences and engineering research rather than a single project. Rated equally on excellence of the researcher, merit of the proposal and training of highly qualified personnel.
